During the autumn term our topic will be learning ‘All About My School,’ focusing on our own class and wider school environment: who is in our class, likes, dislikes and routines. For the first half-term we will be focusing on two stories: ‘Spot Goes to School’ and ‘The Colour Monster Goes to School’. These are part of our communication and focus sessions, helping to develop attention and listening skills whilst widening the pupil’s vocabulary and focus on the chronological events of the story. We will continue to work on sounds that we can recognise or make ourselves and where appropriate pupils will continue to progress through Discovery phonics phase 1. We will explore the beautiful autumn season as it continues to develop and change around us, which means continued learning outside as well as inside. We will also be exploring new sensory and creative experiences linked to this wonderful time of year. This includes visiting the sensory room and soft play in Pennyman Academy during the term.
During our numeracy based sessions we will be focusing on number recognition and counting through rhymes and songs and where appropriate recognising the value of numbers and amounts through lots of sensory activities.
We will continue to work on our alternative augmented communication developing our use of symbols, signs and spoken word. We have expanded our communication resources to include wonderful new communication boards to help us communicate across all of our school environments. All our therapeutic interventions are intertwined into our everyday daily routines. We will endeavour to improve our independence and self-help skills learning about the world that is relevant to us.
