Every day, we support speech, language, and communication development for all our pupils by creating an environment where all forms of communication are encouraged. We use a range of visual aids and technology to help pupils with different communication needs. Our approaches helps every pupil build confidence and improve their communication skills.
Parachute and rope is a group activity that gives children a familiar routine and encourages attention and listening skills and turn raking within a group.
Splash is a sensory stimulating group activity that encourages attention and listening skills and joining in appropriately whilst using props and following routines. It can develop one word level understanding and sign and gestures.
What’s in the box?
What’s in the box is used to develop pupil’s communication and curiosity as well as improving joint attention and listening skills. It is a group activity that focuses on one initial sound at a time and the box contains multiple items that begin with the focus sound. The adult first sings to the child and then opens the box for them to choose an item. Children have to wait for their turn and then put the item back once each child has taken an item.

Who’s got the hat on?
‘Who’s got the hat on?’ is a communication and interaction game. It involves pupils making a choice from a variety of hats or one (depending on their interaction level) which is hidden in a box or bag. Once the pupil has made their choice, they get to look in a mirror wearing a hat. Meanwhile an adult sings and engages the pupil in the game.

Rebound therapy
Rebound therapy is the use of trampolines to provide opportunities for enhanced movement patterns, therapeutic positioning, exercise and recreation for a wide range of children with additional needs. It has many benefits including improving communication, co-ordination, balance and regulation.
Dough disco
Dough Disco is a way of moulding play dough in time to music and performing different actions to improve literacy and motor skills.
Therapy dogs
Therapy dogs visit the school and work with individual classes to encourage communication, independence and build self-esteem. Children can take responsibility and practise walking the dogs around the school.
Horse riding
Horse riding is offered to our pupils where they visit the Unicorn Centre and over a term, they slowly get introduced to the horses to build up their confidence and eventually result in them horse riding.
