Wow what a busy week in Sheila’s year 7/8 class it has been!!
Our class have been learning about what charity is and why charity is important for our community. We have also been learning all about the amazing charity Autism Parents Together and the fantastic opportunities the charity provides for children and young people and their families across the Tees Valley. Next, we are going to work hard to produce a persuasive leaflet which will support this charity by raising awareness of what they do and what they offer.

Sheila’s class have all loved watching the ducklings and chicks as they hatched. They are all now growing so fat. We especially loved watching how happy the ducklings were when they had a swim.

This week in DT we have been discussing the importance of healthy eating and how important the vitamins and minerals we find in vegetables are for our health. The pupils had a class vote regarding what they would like to cook, and it was decided that we were going to make Cheesy Vegetable Pasta because they would be allowed to chop the vegetables as big or as small as they choose. All the children sampled their cooking before taking the rest home to enjoy with their families and carers.

27th March is National Supported Internship Day! The aim of National Supported Internship Day is to raise awareness of supported internships and to advocate for young people with SEN who have ambitions to enter into employment.
Our school have partnered with @NHSEnglandChoicesCollege providing work experience placements to their students to help them increase their independence, skills and knowledge of the sector.
This academic year we have welcomed Tryone into school. Tyrone was keen to assist with PE within school, and was assigned carved tasks such as organising the PE store cupboard and assisting with delivery of lessons and supporting the students. Once Tyrone gained his confidence within these areas staff scaffolded his learning and built in new tasks only when he was ready to progress.
With support from @NHSEnglandChoicesCollegeMR, mentor staff within the school have been able to provide Tyrone with a fantastic opportunity to learn and grow his skills for employment. Tyrone now working independently, thriving in his placement and progressing steadily each week.
Discovery Academy are proud to work with Choices College to provide supported internships for young adults with learning difficulties and/or disabilities, creating a more inclusive workforce and inspiring our own young children about their future careers!
